Principal Van Clemmons hires Keith to determine why so many students are getting doctor’s notes from the same doctor excusing them for having Generalized Anxiety Disorder. He joins a speed dating service to try and find the doctor’s assistant. After sitting through numerous sessions with women who insulted him, annoyed him and disturbed him he finally was matched up with the assistant.

He returned to the school and provided Van Clemmons with a tape where she offered to sell an GAD doctor’s note for $1,000 (while Veronica was hiding in the principal’s closet). Van Clemmons used the information to eliminate Generalized Anxiety Disorder as a valid excuse to get out of class work, causing Veronica’s rival for the Kane scholarship to have to take a test she hadn’t studied for.

fter finally being nailed on sneaking into the school and removing private school property, Veronica was threatened with suspension by Vice-Principal Van Clemmons. However, instead of going that far, he sent her to detention, where she was sent to work organizing and filing permanent records. While toiling in the filing closet, she found her mother’s file which said that she had been suspended, with Deborah Drummond (now Ms. Hauser), for spreading malicious rumors about another student.

However, most of the information was blacked out of the report. After being shot down by Clemmons and Hauser, Clemmons cuts her a break and lists the teachers who were at the school during the incident who are now faculty members. She first confronts the lunch lady, a deaf woman who tells her in sign language that her mother was a “fiend.” Seeing this as a dead-end, Veronica goes to Principal Moorehead, who doesn’t remember what exactly was said but does remember that Lianne was “vicious.” After meeting several dead ends, she meets a friend of Lianne’s for coffee where she is overwhelmed with 20 year old gossip. Veronica learns that either Lianne spread a rumor about Celeste Kane being pregnant because Jake Kane left her, or Celeste made up the pregnancy to break up Lianne and Jake. Keith reluctantly gives up details about a Jane Doe baby being left in a bathroom at the prom, a detail which is appears significant when Celeste drops by with her assistant, a 25 year old woman who looks remarkably like Celeste. To find out if the woman really is Celeste’s abandoned daughter, Veronica finds the woman’s former temporary foster parents. The foster mother tells Veronica that her presumption was totally wrong, the adopted child was none other than Trina Echolls. Veronica and Trina hatch a plan to shame Celeste into going public. But, all of these things are cast aside when Mary, the deaf lunchlady from earlier in the episode signs to Veronica that Trina is her child and that Lianne was not a “fiend” but a “friend.”
The mystery concludes in a completely different way, in that Mary was having an affair with a faculty member and had gotten pregnant. Lianne, mistakenly, went to Deborah for advice about the matter – she spread the story across school. Lianne recanted and said that she made the entire thing up in order to protect Mary. After having the child, Mary left the baby with the father who dumped the child at the prom to avoid suspicion. The father was actually Principal Alan Moorehead and Veronica’s uncovering of the mystery was orchestrated by Clemmons to usurp Moorehead’s position as Principal.

The Oliveres family lost their only son, Marcos in the school bus disaster. Frustrated and distraught, they began suing the school district for negligence. Once they filed their suit, they began to be ‘haunted’ by the ‘ghost’ of their son; Miniature school buses, voicemails with recordings of their son and other occurrences happen as an apparent attempt to scare them out of the suit. The two hire Keith to get to the bottom of the issue. He quickly finds an MP3 player, which was bought by the school district, broadcasting Marcos’ voice over the car radio. The principal brushes off Veronica’s inquisition, but she discovers that Marcos was a DJ for a pirate radio station—Ahoy Mateys!—in which he routinely antagonized the school with hit rants. Mysteriously, the show took a sabbatical, after which Marcos was no longer part of the production.

Veronica and Mac find where the broadcast is by tracking the signal, to the home of vice-principal Van Clemmons where his son Vincent (Butters) has been broadcasting the show as the sidekick. Vincent explains that he doesn’t know why Marcos left the show, but it occurred after he went to camp and changed completely. Veronica discovers that this camp was created to attempt to “heal” teenagers’ sexuality with the power of God. Meanwhile, at the stakeout, Keith finds another school bus and a scrap of paper with Simon & Stern letterhead and the security code for the house on it, however he realized that evidence was planted because the fish were fed by the person who “broke in.” Keith suggests that they take the settlement. Meanwhile, Veronica traces an anonymous email to Roxie’s house. There she finds Ryan, a boy who knew that Marcos and Butters did the radio show and was in love with Marcos. He was the one who left the messages and toy buses, because he blames his parents for his death. After Marcos was sent to SelfQuest, he was desperate to win back his parents and, thus, went to “normal” things like the baseball field trip.

Meanwhile, Keith has been hired by Lynn Echolls. Her husband Aaron has received some new and disturbing threats which accuse him of infidelity, and the Echolls don’t want anything to ruin their big Christmas party.

Troy, Luke, and Logan are in Tijuana for a night of good times, although they’re held up when Luke wants to buy a souvenir of their trip. After a pass through customs, they stop in a diner for food. Upon leaving, they realize that Troy’s car, actually his father’s, was stolen.
The next day, Veronica checks her home’s answering machine, which has a message from Rebecca James, Neptune High’s school counselor, and Keith’s current girlfriend. Cut to Luke’s pained face, as a bodybuilder demands the drugs that he was supposed to receive. The next day at school, Luke comes clean about the drugs and enlists Veronica’s help.

After school, Veronica uses a safe deposit box key she found in her mother’s things and finds shots of herself framed in a rifle sight. Then, she attempts to activate the homing device on the stolen car, but can’t quite work her magic. Which is bad news for Troy, because he is soon chased by the bodybuilder.

At school, Logan says that while he was in on the steroid deal, Troy didn’t know anything. Veronica comes home to an awkward conversation with Rebecca. She flashes back to the time when she told her real mom that she’s dating Duncan Kane. Veronica skips out on dinner, in order to come with Logan to the local chop shop. She finds out that the piñata (where the drugs were stashed) was given to a relative for a birthday party. She arrives at the party just in time to see the piñata busted… and sugar candies falling out.

At home, Veronica starts sending out cell phones in another attempt to find her mother. Keith walks in, and Veronica takes this opportunity to ask for his help in tracing the car. He agrees to help her boyfriend if she lays off his girlfriend. The next day, Keith manages to activate the homing beacon, which leads to a dog in the 09er zip code.

Veronica uses her background checker to find information about Rebecca James, and digs up enough dirt to cause tension between Veronica and Keith. Keith does the same to Veronica, using his contacts to create a background for Troy. The next day, Veronica confronts him with the fact that he had a history of drug trafficking. Meanwhile, Keith breaks up with Rebecca.

Veronica confronts the “Z-Meister” with Luke’s money, and uses the confrontation to take a photo of the body builder. She then faxes the photo to the border patrol, where he is soon caught (we assume) bringing in steroids.

The ending closes with Troy’s parents sending him to boarding school. Instead, he bribes the cabbie and stops at the same diner where he stopped after Tijuana. He grabs the bag of drugs from the bathroom stash and drives off in the same car that was stolen. On his way out to who-knows-where, he receives a call from his ex Shauna, who informs him that she told Veronica they were getting back together. Panicked, Troy opens the bag of steroids, only to find candy and a letter from Veronica.

We then see Veronica on her bed, listening to music while her mother leaves a voice mail.

Troy and Veronica’s relationship is going well; even Keith doesn’t seem to dislike him, and they have plans to go to the Homecoming dance. Troy is even willing to go mini-golfing with the Marses (although this goes somewhat awkwardly when Keith discovers Troy’s plans for the dance and cancels Troy’s hotel reservation).

Wallace brings Veronica her latest school client, a student he has a crush on who works with him in the counselor’s office named Georgia. Georgia has been taken in by an e-mail scam promising 200% interest on a loan to a (supposed) trust fund recipient with gambling debts, and is out a large sum of money. Veronica agrees to help… for ten percent of whatever she recovers. Wallace is just excited for an excuse to talk to his crush on a regular basis.

The Kane family is dedicating a memorial fountain to their murdered daughter, and the town is invited for the ceremony. Logan takes it upon himself to prepare the video tribute for his ex-girlfriend; meanwhile, Veronica remembers last year’s homecoming dance, with her, Lilly, Duncan and Logan renting a limo and avoiding the dance altogether to get drunk. Lilly proves to have been the leader of the group–the vivacious, adventurous type–and provides an evening memorable enough that nobody really minds when they get in trouble for showing up, hungover, the next day. Eventually, seeing Logan struggle with making a tribute video that captures Lilly’s true spirit, she gives him the camcorder footage of the homecoming dance to use instead of Lilly’s more generic childhood home movies.

Posing as a vacant student, Veronica sets up a sting on Carl, the supposed e-mail scammer; Georgia doesn’t recognize the man who meets with Veronica, posing as the trust fund kid, but he is wearing the same clothes as the man she met. They track his car to a local theater, where “Carl” (actually an actor named Jimmy Spain, which now that I think of it probably isn’t his real name either) is starring in a Beckett play and, upon confrontation, under the impression that the money transfers are part of a Punk’d-style reality show. Jimmy is horrified (mostly because he really needed the work), and gives up the number of his employer; it’s a pay phone near a gaming club, which Veronica decides to check out. Despite a certain cultural mismatch between a bunch of gaming nerds and a girl, Veronica manages to find Grant, a gamer whose nickname matches Georgia’s email, steal his ID, and track him and his friend to San Diego State.

Veronica and Wallace crash a party on campus in order to dig up more information; Veronica learns that Grant is a computer genius using his ill-gotten funds (along with his enforcer friend) to finance a computer game he is working on (and the impressive security system that foils her investigative attempts), while Wallace has a discussion about math with a man in a Viking helmet. Undaunted, Veronica enlists Keith to bug the dorm room; Veronica uses the bug to crack the security code, and the security code to get into the dorm room and steal Grant’s files, which she exchanges in return for Gloria’s money. For their hard work, Veronica gets a nice commission, Wallace gets a kiss from Georgia, and Grant gets a call from the FBI’s anti-fraud division.

At the memorial service, Celeste gives the dedication speech for the fountain and introduces Logan’s memorial video. The unexpectedly raunchy video still manages to win over the crowd, including the Kanes (even Celeste, eventually), Veronica, and a surprisingly emotional Weevil. Later, on the way to the homecoming dance, Veronica passes the beach she spent last year’s dance at, and memorializes Lilly in her own way.

At a beach party held by and for the rich kids at Neptune High (they use code to keep the undesirables like Wallace and Veronica away), we are introduced to Logan’s new girlfriend, Caitlin Ford, and another one of Duncan’s friends, Troy Vandergraff, who is newly enrolled at Neptune. Weevil’s gang crashes the party, claiming the turf for his gang, and ends up smack-talking with Logan, who makes some derogatory comments about Weevil’s grandmother, the Echolls family housekeeper. The police break up the party before Logan and Weevil’s macho posturing can erupt in violence, but the next day, Weevil’s grandmother (who appears to be the parental figure for Weevil and his cousin Chardo, also a Weevlet (Weevling?), as well as several other children) gets arrested for stealing credit cards from the Echolls’ trash. Mrs. Navarro’s lawyer Cliff suspects Weevil may be the real culprit, and Veronica and Keith are dispatched to dig up the truth. Weevil is uncooperative.

Sheriff Lamb accosts Veronica and Keith at a restaurant for more macho posturing; it’s nearly October 3rd, the first anniversary of Lilly Kane’s murder, and the sheriff would like to rub it in Keith’s face. Keith points out that the only reason Sheriff Lamb was able to solve the murder was through an anonymous tipster who refused the reward, casting doubts on the source’s legitimacy, but the Sheriff fires back that the Kanes have airtight alibis for the murder.

Later, Veronica runs into Troy and Wallace in the guidance counselor’s office; Veronica is there for guidance, Troy is there to flirt with Veronica (unaware of her reputation), while Wallace is there to work (Veronica convinces him to help with her investigation by stealing Weevil’s files). Veronica herself, meanwhile, ends up joining journalism class, at her counselor’s insistence, as a photographer as a way to break out of her “disconnected and passionless” life, but her first assignment pairs her up with Duncan Kane.

Back at the Weevil investigation, Veronica and Wallace discover that several of the fraudulent credit card purchases were made when Weevil was in class; this would appear to exonerate him, but when she presents her evidence to Cliff and Keith, they tell her Weevil has confessed. Veronica, suspecting a framing, targets Logan and Caitlin next; it turns out Logan’s computer records match with a fancy hotel booking made on the credit cards.

It also appears that Logan slashed Veronica’s tire; although Troy offers a helping hand, Veronica ends up having to ride with Duncan to her journalism assignment, which starts out awkward but becomes slightly more comfortable by the end. However, on the way home, they’re pulled over by the cops; Duncan has been driving Lilly’s car, and there’s an impound notice because of all her unpaid tickets, the last of which took place October 3rd. Jake and Keith have to come to pick up their children, and the awkwardness returns. The last time they met was during the murder investigation, when Keith came to believe Jake was the killer. Given the choice to stand by her father or keep her circle of friends, she chose Keith. On the way home, Veronica convinces Keith to go to the hotel and help her acquire the bill summary for the hotel billing. They discover Caitlin signed for room service during the visit. It’s not enough to get Logan to confess (although he does look concerned upon being confronted), but it is enough to get Weevil out of jail.

The next day, both Veronica and Logan end up investigating Caitlin’s hotel visit. Logan goes through Caitlin’s cell phone, Veronica checks some phone calls made using the credit card, and both discover (and call) the same number. Veronica gets a busy signal and has the number run through her father, while Logan nearly engages in phone sex with Weevil’s cousin. Veronica manages to get to him first, and he confesses: he used the credit cards to try and impress the spoiled (and slumming) Caitlin, and that the two of them are planning to run away together. Further investigation reveals that Weevil, still a juvenile, took the fall so that Chardo could avoid jail time, but once the reason for the fraud comes out, the Navarros decide protecting Chardo might not be such a hot idea after all. Chardo is saved from his vicious beating at the hands of Logan and his rich friends, only to receive a vicious beating from the rest of Weevil’s gang instead. Caitlin reveals she was not particularly serious about her plans to run away with Chardo.

Remembering the date of Lilly Kane’s last traffic infraction, Veronica uses an old fake ID of Lilly’s to look up the ticket date. Her findings: an automated camera caught Lilly running a red light two hours after her approximate time of death. The Kane family’s alibis are shot.
